Answering Machine Jokes

Most answering machines include a short customized message from the owner, usually telling the caller they are sorry they couldn't answer the phone and that they should leave a message after the tone.  This is perfectly fine, but I have a better idea.

After you say "Thanks for calling Susie Smith," tell a quick joke.  It should be slightly funny, but offensive to absolutely no one.  The joke should be placed right at the end of the message, so hopefully when you listen to your messages, everyone will start out by laughing.  Not only will it be more entertaining to listen to your messages, but people might be nicer as well.
