Edible Plastic Wrap

Today I was thinking about apples.  The apple peel acts to seal off the apple material from the environment so it can stay fresh.  How convenient, I thought to myself, that apples have a built-in wrapper.  Not only is it built-in, it's edible as well.

Edible plastic wrap.  Imagine not having to open a plastic bag to eat bread, muffins, or cookies.  Or, even better, individually wrapped candies could be eaten without unwrapping anything.

The plastic wrap could be made of some sugar structure, and in an ideal world it would "melt" away easily to avoid interfering with the texture of the food item.  In the same way that cotton candy dissolves like air, this edible plastic wrap would dissipate upon liquid contact.

Not only would it be more convenient for the user, it would also reduce plastic waste.
