I remember back in my elementary and middle school days, teachers each year would try to explain similes and metaphors. Similes made sense right away, but metaphors took a few years to completely understand, and it took my classmates even longer.
Metaphors are not a hard concept. I should be a touring elementary/middle school hybrid teacher-speaker, traveling around the country blessing children with the knowledge of metaphors. All I would need to do is play a few pop songs and point out the metaphors. "My heart's a stereo, turn it up when you feel low..." In this case, his heart is not actually a stereo, but rather he is comparing his heart to one. Boom. Done. Simple as that.
