When two people walk down a long path or hallway in opposite directions towards each other, there are multiple stages of their interaction (given that they know each other well). The first is before they initially recognize each other. Everything is fine at this stage. The final stage is when they are close enough to meaningfully interact (able to easily talk to and hear each other). In between these two stages is a nice, juicily long awkward stage. Drawn in yellow in the diagram below, this is the stage after both parties recognize each other, but before they are close enough to talk.
I find it entertaining to see what people do during this stage. Some people wave, some pretend to look at something on their phone, and others just continue normally. And a select few people intensely stare down the other person, trying to observe which type of person their associate is.
